Access & Escape

A limited number of our LR Conservation range can be manufactured with internally mounted gas struts to hold open the casement. These operate in a similar way to a car boot and allow the user access without the need to support the casement weight. They continue to operate with the screwjack mechanism for daily use but this can be detached by pulling the quick release pin and then pushing the casement. The struts are designed for lifting so closing the casement will be more difficult. The HR2/E is a stock item whereas the other sizes are made to order on a 6 week delivery time. Please note that the LR5 and LR10 versions are suitable for access rather than escape. This is due to the increased weight of the casement and the additional lift required to activate the gas struts.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
The access and escape rooflights are supplied with variable gas struts that require adjustment on site at the point of installation. The strut manufacturer recommends variable struts for this type of application as the pitch of the roof and the required initial lifting weight will vary between each project. Adjusting the force of the struts is easy and done by releasing gas via a small valve at the top of the strut. The struts are supplied fully charged and you should release gas on each strut in equal time increments until you are happy with them. LR4/E

Manufacture LR4 with variable Nitro Struts

Lumen conservation roof windows are supplied with Pilkington self clean double glazed units, a solid American oak interior liner and a brass hand mechanism as standard. However, we offer a variety of enhancement options including a choice of British made manual mechanisms, electric actuator options with rain and temperature control, a range of pleated blackout blinds, linking bars and access/escape rooflights options.

With all of our standard conservation rooflights it is possible to detach the winding mechanism from the opening casement.
In situations where an escape rooflight is specified we manufacture the LR4 with preset Nitro Struts.
Our conservation escape version is top hung to ensure a matching profile when used alongside our standard range. As with all our opening casements the escape rooflights can be used on a daily basis with our winding mechanisms. We have decided to use a top hung version as these are less susceptible to light rain than side hung rooflights.

The LR4 escape can be used in the same roof pitch as our standard conservation product.

Regular access
If you wish to use the rooflight for regular assisted access, we can supply struts with a reduced capacity to assist with the opening and closing. Using a lower rated strut will render the rooflight unacceptable for escape purpose and the item must not be used as such. Please tell our team at point of order whether you require the rooflight for escape or access purposes.

Safety

For additional safety our Lumen LR4 escape rooflight utilises Econoloc gas springs. These positively lock when fully extended, protecting the operator from potential injury in the unlikely event of gas spring failure through overload or misuse. When the gas spring is fully extended a spring loaded locking shroud moves into place, preventing the gas spring from compressing.

It is therefore essential that the winder is maintained on a regular basis and that the pin moves easily. Failure to do this may result on the pin sticking and the casement will not open fully.

Design

Design

The variable force range of gas struts are supplied charge to the maximum pressure as standard and can be reduced as part of the installation process. These versatile struts are supplied with a black epoxy powder coated cylinder, black nitor carburized piston rod and have a working temperature range between -30c to +80c.
The brass winding mechanism is supplied for daily use of the access/escape rooflight and we do not recommend using the struts for regular opening. When activated the struts will hold the opening casement open to allow access to the roof.
